Share any exciting news in your family this last year? New family members, children's accomplishments, fun trips?

We’ve been in the central valley for two years now and purchased a new home and really making ourselves at home. We miss SoCal, but we are closer to family now.

Anything new or exciting in 2014 with your job?

In terms of work, we have been able to turn our district around with the implementation of LCFF and we continue to have a positive certification. We are also working on a charter renewal so that is new, exciting and a great learning experience and also working on opening our own multi-lingual strand to include the 90-10 model with Spanish and introducing mandarin in the third grade. We hope to open the strand in the fall, so this is all new territory for us.

Anything else notable that you could share?

Continue to work closely with the Trojan network. I don’t think I would have been as successful in my two first years as a CBO without the support of the Trojan family and this network.

The last few years since the USC School Business Management Certification Program in 2009, I really have achieved many of my professional goals being appointed to Purchasing Director along with Food Service Director. This last year I really feel I have pulled the two positions together creating teams and collaboration. With that I was able to prepare for my last daughter's college graduation from CalPoly in San Luis Obispo and enjoy her growth. My husband and I took a big leap to downsize from the family home of 21 years. I could not have done this unless I was settled in my professional world. I have learned to delegate and not be identified by my job, but put family first! It was a great year with much change but fearless!

Being able to carry on my job with a new attitude, that it will be okay as I hit 20 years at Central School District was exciting!

Somehow we wound up going to Hawaii twice – once at Xmas and once in August. My son, who leaves sand pits and the swimming pool, was a very happy guy. I also wound up being appointed to my district Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee and to our local AYSO Board of Directors. Its all starting to sound a bit civic-minded and respectable and I’m feeling a growing need for a red convertible.

We closed our New markets Tax Credit (aka when too many lawyers is barely enough) – NEVER have anything to do with an NMTC if you can avoid it – which meant we could finally start building the preschool facility I’ve been working on since May 2010. Construction started in August and has been held up for the last week by rain! I’ve attached a couple of photos, including one of a surprisingly small number of people pumping (sorry placing) a truly staggering amount of concrete in a very short time. We have very nearly raised all the money we need and are starting to look forward to hiring folks. Its all getting very concrete – see what I did there.

Anything else notable that you could share?

There have been 29 K-12 school shootings in the US in 2014 and 51 since Newtown.

My 10th grader has started driving. Her original demand was for a Porsche but has finally agreed to our 15 year old family car. Took kids to DC and spent a lot of weekends at our cabin.

This year was a big year for me (and my wife) as we celebrate a milestone birthday, the big 2-5! J I wish, but being 40 is not so bad. I’ve learned that my parents were right, and as a parent, I am right and my kids will realize that when they are 40…

I think I’m just happy to make it through all of the challenges of 2014 and very thankful for the group of folks that I work with that make work fun and have a passion for getting things done for kids. It sure is nice when everyone has a common goal.

This is a pic of my family (daughter Kaytlain, son Nick and wife Lupe) visiting with my cousin and his wife over spring break in Virginia.
